Avobook News – Quality: The Key to the Growth of Peruvian Avocados in International Markets

According to a recent press release from ProHass, Europe remains the primary destination for Peruvian avocados, accounting for nearly 64% of export volume, while markets such as the United States and Asia continue to expand their share, with growing demand in countries like China, South Korea, and Japan.

Against a backdrop of sustained growth, the industry emphasizes that product quality is one of the cornerstones for maintaining the international standing of Peruvian avocados. A key aspect of this is harvesting only when the avocado reaches a minimum of 22% dry matter content, a key indicator for ensuring proper ripening and quality at the destination. Likewise, the sector continues to strengthen its control and verification protocols through ongoing analysis, with the aim of meeting the demanding standards of international markets.

These mechanisms highlight the importance of having structured systems for monitoring and controlling production processes, particularly in agro-export sectors where even small variations in crop management or harvest timing can significantly affect the quality of the final product.

In this context, various international sustainability and management frameworks also promote approaches that reinforce these types of practices. The Performance Standards of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), for example, emphasize the importance of organizations implementing management systems that enable identify risks, establish control procedures, and continuously monitor its operations. In particular, the Performance Standard 1 highlights the need for monitoring and verification mechanisms to ensure the consistency of processes and compliance with established operational standards.

In addition, the Global Reporting Initiative standards (GRI) they also emphasize the importance of organizations having clear processes in place to ensure the quality and characteristics of the products they bring to market. In this regard, The GRI 416: Customer Health and Safety encourages companies to assess the potential impacts of their products on consumers and to establish review and control mechanisms throughout the product lifecycle. In turn, the GRI 417: Marketing and Labeling emphasizes transparency in information regarding the characteristics and attributes of products.

In sectors such as the avocado industry, where international competitiveness depends largely on product consistency and quality, the implementation of control, monitoring, and verification protocols becomes a key factor. Beyond meeting commercial requirements, these systems reflect practices aligned with international management and reporting standards, helping to strengthen market confidence and consolidate Peru’s reputation as a reliable supplier of high-quality fruit.
